Taste and See
“Taste and see that Yahweh is good. Blessed is the person who takes refuge in him.” — Psalm 34:8 (GW)
There are some things in life that cannot fully be explained—they must be experienced. No matter how beautifully someone describes honey, you will never truly know its sweetness until it touches your tongue. Psalm 34 invites us into that kind of knowing with God. David does not say, “Study and see,” or even, “Listen and see.” He says, taste and see.
David wrote Psalm 34 after a season of fear, desperation, and deliverance. He had fled for his life, pretending insanity before a king to escape death. Yet in the middle of his distress, he discovered something profound: YHWH was still good. Not only in safety. Not only in abundance. But in uncertainty.
Sometimes we wait for life to become easier before we believe God is good. We think goodness must look like answered prayers, healed relationships, or doors opening exactly the way we hoped. But Psalm 34 reminds us that God’s goodness is often discovered in the refuge of His presence during hardship—not merely in the removal of it.
To “take refuge” in YHWH means to run toward Him instead of away from Him. It means bringing Him the honest ache, the unanswered questions, the exhaustion, and the fear. Refuge is not pretending to be strong. It is trusting that He is.
The beautiful thing about tasting God’s goodness is that it becomes personal. Borrowed faith eventually runs dry. Secondhand testimonies can encourage us, but they cannot sustain us. There comes a moment when each of us must encounter Him ourselves. We must taste His peace in the middle of anxiety. Taste His comfort in grief. Taste His mercy after failure. Taste His nearness when loneliness whispers that we are forgotten.
And when we do, we begin to realize something life-changing: God’s goodness is not dependent on our circumstances. His character does not shift with the weather of our lives. He remains kind, faithful, and near.
Today, YHWH is inviting you closer—not into performance, but into presence. Not into striving, but into refuge.
Prayer
YHWH, thank You for being good even when life feels uncertain. Teach me to run to You as my refuge instead of relying on my own strength. Help me experience Your presence personally and deeply, not just through what others say about You. Open my heart to taste Your peace, Your comfort, and Your faithfulness today. Remind me that Your goodness never changes, even when my circumstances do. Amen.
